European Bison, birds, ancient forest

Area: Bialowieza Forest is the best preserved piece of old, primeval European lowland forest. It is now the realm of European Bison which was nearly extinct a few decades ago but which population was rebuilt thanks to the work of scientists and conservationists. In winter Bison gather near numerous feeding places and it is relatively easy to find and photograph them. The forest is also rich in other kinds of wildlife: Red Deer, Wild Boar, Wolf, Lynx, Elk etc. Beaver are very common along the rivers along with Otter and American mink. Old forest attract woodpeckers, Three-toed and White-backed being most interesting.

Rough itinerary:

1st day – arrival, transfer from Warsaw airport to Bialowieza (230 km, ca. 4h driving)

2nd-6th day – 5 full days of nature photography in the Bialowieza Forest area:

2 days: bison safari – looking for European Bison and other species (Red Deer, Otter, Beaver) in the area; ca. 150 km drive everyday (Nissan X-trail 4x4 or Suzuki Jimny 4x4)

2 days: eagle hide photography – 2 full days in the eagle hide (ca. 11-12h), photographing birds of prey (white-tailed eagle, common buzzard, goshawk) and scavengers (raven, red fox)

1 day: forest/ garden hide photography – photographing various forest birds (woodpeckers, tits, hawfinches, greenfinches, jay, sparrowhawk etc.)
view the hide: winter garden/forest feeder

7th day – departure and transfer to Warsaw airport

Details about this workshop (incl. accommodation, itinerary, maps, species lists, additional equipment) can be sent on demand.

Price: 900 Euro / 300 Euro deposit

included: accommodation and meals (full board) in B&B, transport (local and to/from Warsaw airport), guiding, use of the photohides
not included: personal insurance, flight tickets, all items of personal nature, optional activities (see below)

Optional activities:

- Walk (ca. 7 km) in the Strictly Protected Area of the Bialowieza National Park with a licensed guide – old-growth forest (the most interesting part of the Park) in winter – landscape photography.
Price: the guide: 120 Euro per group (1-3 people) + extra transport to Bialowieza and back: 60 Euro (per car – 1-3 people)
